1998 Honda Odyssey
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a transponder key and why does the 1998 Odyssey need one?

Starting with the 1998 model year, Honda fitted the Odyssey with an immobilizer that reads a small chip inside the key every time you turn the ignition. If the chip isn't there or isn't programmed to that vehicle, the engine won't run. A key cut to the correct profile will turn the cylinder just fine, but the van will still refuse to start because the security side rejected it. That's why a hardware store copy won't work on this vehicle.

Q: Why does dealer key programming cost so much when it only takes a few minutes?

Dealers bill by the flat-rate labor system, which means you're paying for a blocked time slot regardless of how fast the actual programming runs. The tech's time to check out the equipment, pull your file, run the procedure, and document it all gets rolled into a single charge. What looks like a quick job on paper carries the full overhead of the service department behind it. We skip all of that.

Q: I had a spare key cut at a hardware store and it turns the ignition but the van won't start. What's going on?

That's the transponder doing its job. The blade cut on your hardware store copy is probably fine, which is why it turns. But that key has no chip inside it, or the chip isn't programmed to your Odyssey, so the immobilizer blocks the engine from running. This is one of the most common calls I get on late-nineties Hondas. The owner thinks the new key works because it turns, then gets stranded when the van won't fire.

Q: Can I program a replacement key for my 1998 Odyssey myself at home?

No self-programming sequence exists for the transponder on this generation Odyssey. Professional equipment is required to register the chip. There's no ignition-turn trick or button combination that handles it on this vehicle.

1998 Honda Odyssey Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A man in East End called about his 1998 Honda Odyssey. He used a cane, his daughter was out of town, and the nearest Honda dealer is a real trip when you don't have easy transportation. He had one working key and wanted a spare before anything went wrong. That's the smart call, and he knew it.

I drove out to his complex that morning. The Odyssey key from this era is a transponder turn-key, so the job was decoding the lock, cutting a new key to match, and programming the transponder chip so the van would recognize it. I did the whole thing at his vehicle, in the parking lot, while he watched from a shaded spot nearby.

He asked a few questions about how the chip part worked. I walked him through it in plain terms. He appreciated that more than I expected.

He didn't have to arrange a ride, sit in a waiting room, or deal with paperwork. He got two working keys out of it. The dealer had quoted him a number for just one, and that didn't include the trip. He saved a good chunk and never left the property.

For a 1998 Odyssey key in Ojai, that's the whole job. You call, I come to the car.

Honda Odyssey Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How long does a Honda dealer take for a key replacement on a 1998 Odyssey?▼

Longer than the actual work justifies. Honda owners with late-nineties vehicles consistently report that the real door-to-door time at a dealer runs anywhere from an hour and a half to three hours, even though the programming itself takes only a few minutes. The time goes to check-in, the queue for a tech, pulling up the VIN, and closeout paperwork. If the key blank isn't on the shelf, add days for a parts order before they even start.
