Got a call from a man near Ojai Meadows Preserve about his 1998 Honda Odyssey. He used a cane, lived in an independent living complex, and his daughter who normally handled errands was traveling. He had one working key left, and the remote portion was getting flaky. He wanted a spare made before the whole thing gave out on him.
I drove out that morning. His Odyssey is the first-generation RA model, which uses a plain edge-cut key with an ID13 transponder chip in the head. No smart key, no push button, just a physical key and a separate keyless remote. I used my HO01 Lishi to decode the lock wafers right on the driver door, verified the cuts, and made a fresh key on the mobile machine.
Here is where the 1998 is different from later Hondas. This generation does not support OBD-based transponder registration the way a 2000-plus does. The immobilizer ECU has to be accessed more directly. I cloned the ID13 chip from his working key to the new one, confirmed the green immobilizer dash light cycled off on start, and the engine caught clean.
Then I paired his separate remote, tested lock, unlock, and the panic button from across the lot. Showed him how to pop the remote case and check the battery before it dies on him again.
He watched the whole thing from a bench ten feet away. Never had to leave the property or call anyone for a ride.
