1999 Honda Odyssey
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How fast can you get to me in Ojai, near Matilija?

In most cases, within 30 minutes of your call, depending on where I am when you reach me. Everything I need is already on the van: key blanks, cutting equipment, programming tools. There's no waiting on a service bay or a parts order. You call, I come to you.

Q: Can I get a replacement key made today, same day?

Yes. Same-day is the standard, not a special circumstance. Dealers sometimes have to order blanks, and owners of older Honda models report waiting several days just for the part to come in before any cutting or programming even starts. I stock the blanks for the 1999 Odyssey on the van. You won't be waiting on a shipment or rescheduling around a service department's availability.

Q: A hardware store cut me a copy of my 1999 Odyssey key. It turns the ignition but the engine dies right after. What happened?

That's the classic sign of a blank with no transponder chip in it. The key blade turns the cylinder fine because the cut matches, but the immobilizer doesn't see a valid chip signal, so it shuts the engine down within a second or two of starting. It's a security function doing exactly what it was designed to do. Hardware stores and general-purpose key kiosks typically cut whatever blank fits the keyway.

Q: I lost both keys to my 1999 Odyssey. Can you still make a replacement, or does it have to go to the dealer?

All-keys-lost is a job I handle regularly on these. The immobilizer has to be reset so it will accept a newly enrolled key, since it won't just recognize a fresh chip with no prior pairing. That reset process takes a little extra time compared to adding a key when you still have one working, but it's fully doable on-site in Ojai without a tow and without a dealer.

1999 Honda Odyssey Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a physical therapist who was stuck at her clinic off Matilija.

She had patients booked back to back, her 1999 Honda Odyssey wasn't going anywhere, and a dealer visit would have meant canceling a full day of work plus arranging a tow. She'd tried to have a spare made somewhere that wasn't set up for it, and now neither key was behaving the way it should. She wasn't angry about it, just tired and running on a short lunch window.

I told her I'd be there and she could keep seeing patients.

When I got to the lot, I started with the blade. The cut on the spare someone else had made was off in a couple of spots, which would have caused its own headaches at the ignition cylinder over time. I cut a fresh key to the vehicle, then moved to the transponder side. The chip in the existing key was still reading, so I worked with what she had, enrolled the new key to the immobilizer, and tested both before she came back out.

She came out between appointments to two working keys sitting on her desk. She hadn't moved her car, hadn't missed a patient, and spent a fraction of what the dealer had quoted her, which also would have required a tow since the van wasn't drivable. Mobile service exists specifically for days like that one.

How long does a 1999 Honda Odyssey key replacement take?▼

For a standard one-key-remaining situation, figure about 30 to 45 minutes once I'm at the vehicle. That covers cutting the blade, enrolling the transponder to the immobilizer, and running a full test to confirm the engine starts and holds. All-keys-lost takes a bit longer because the immobilizer reset procedure has a timed sequence built into it, so add 15 to 20 minutes on top of that.
