Got a call one evening from a couple near State Street in Santa Barbara. They were on a road trip, staying at a motel, down to their last Altima key and it had just snapped off in the door lock. Half the blade was still jammed in the cylinder.
First thing I did was extract the broken piece. The U13 door lock uses a standard Nissan wafer cylinder, and the fragment came out clean with a broken key extractor. No damage to the lock internals.
Then I pulled the key code. On a 1995 Altima you can read the lock code from the passenger door cylinder or decode it by impression from the ignition. I decoded theirs, cut a fresh DA31 blade on my machine in the van, and tested it in all four doors, the trunk, and the ignition.
Whole thing took maybe twenty minutes in their motel parking lot.
They had already called a dealer earlier that day. The dealer wanted the car towed in, said it would be a next-day appointment, and quoted them for the tow on top of the key. For a car with no chip, no programming, no electronics involved at all. Just a metal key cut to a code.
They got two fresh copies from me that night. Kept one in a bag in the trunk and one on the ring. Road trip saved.
