Got a call from a guy over in the Via Marina neighborhood in Oxnard. His 2003 Altima had been sitting for about three weeks while he was out of town. He came back, put his key in the ignition, and nothing. Engine cranked strong but would not catch. The red security light on the instrument cluster was blinking steady, which told him the NATS system was not recognizing the transponder.
He had one key. The original spare was gone years ago.
He called the Nissan dealer. They told him to tow it in, earliest opening was two days out. He started looking at tow costs and it snowballed from there.
I drove out that afternoon. Plugged my Autel IM608 into the OBD port under the dash, pulled the BCM data, and read the NATS5 PIN from the 28590 module. His original key's ID46 chip was still in the system but the immobilizer had lost sync, which happens sometimes on these third-gen Altimas after a long sit with a weak battery.
Re-registered his existing key, cut and programmed a spare NI02 transponder key on site so he would not be in this spot again. The whole thing took about 25 minutes. He watched from the driver seat while I worked from the passenger side with the laptop on the dash.
He drove to the grocery store. That was it. No tow, no dealer wait, a fraction of what that route would have cost.
