2020 Nissan Altima
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long should a replacement Intelligent Key last on a 2020 Altima?

A properly programmed replacement should last as long as the original. The programming itself doesn't degrade. What does fail over time is the battery and the physical contacts inside the fob. Altima owners on forums mention the battery terminals going slightly oxidized and causing intermittent behavior that mimics a dying key. A pencil eraser on the contacts, a fresh CR2032 seated correctly, and the fob often comes right back.

Q: What if my new key stops working a few weeks after you program it?

Call me. That's what the warranty is for. The most common post-programming complaint on this generation is a key-not-detected warning even when the lock and unlock buttons still work. Sometimes it's a battery seating issue. Sometimes it's the fob. Occasionally the problem is on the vehicle side, like a weak signal from the antenna ring around the ignition area or the door handle sensors. Whatever it turns out to be, we come back and work through it.

Q: I have a working key but I bought a second fob online. Can you just program it to my 2020 Altima?

Yes, as long as the fob is the right one for this vehicle. Bring the fob and your working key. Adding a key to the 2020 Altima requires diagnostic equipment connected through the OBD port. There's no ignition-turn sequence or button trick that works on this generation's Intelligent Key system. The new fob has to be enrolled by a tool that can communicate with the vehicle's security system directly.

Q: The door handle touch sensor on my Altima stopped unlocking the car. Is that a key problem?

Probably not. If the push-button start still recognizes the fob and the buttons on the key work, the fob itself is likely fine. The touch unlock sensors on the door handles are their own component. Dirt, moisture, and minor corrosion around the sensor area are the usual culprits, and a wipe-down of the handle zone is always worth trying first.

2020 Nissan Altima Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from an event planner in a parking lot off Oxnard's Mandalay Beach area. She had a catering situation unfolding nearby and a 2020 Altima that wouldn't respond to the Intelligent Key fob. The event was loading in under two hours and her car was sitting exactly where it shouldn't be.

I pulled up in about 25 minutes. The fob battery was the first thing I checked, because a weak CR2032 on this generation can fool you. The car might crank, might not, might throw a key-not-detected warning on the dash, and the remote functions start dropping out before the start function does. That's the part people don't expect: lock and unlock can go first, and the owner assumes the key is fine because the car still started that morning.

Her situation needed a fresh battery and a look at the fob contacts, then a reconnect through the OBD port to clear what the system had logged. The whole job was about 20 minutes of hands-on time.

She drove out of the loading zone with a solid window before setup started. The dealer option would have meant a tow, a service appointment, and nobody caring about her event timeline.

Nissan Altima Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys for the 2020 Altima?▼

We supply keys that are verified to spec for this vehicle. On the 2020 Altima's Intelligent Key system, aftermarket fobs sourced from online marketplaces can be inconsistent. Some won't hold programming. Some have contact quality that degrades faster than the original. Nissan dealers typically won't touch a third-party fob, and even if they try, there's no guarantee it pairs correctly. We match the correct blank and frequency to your specific vehicle before we head out.
