2000 Nissan Altima
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What is a transponder key and why does my 2000 Altima need one?

A transponder key has a small chip embedded in the plastic head of the key. When you turn it in the ignition, the car's immobilizer reads that chip. If the chip is missing, unrecognized, or unprogrammed, the engine either will not start at all or will start and shut off within a second or two. The 2000 Altima is an early example of this system in Nissan's lineup.

Q: How long does the dealer process actually take for a Nissan key replacement?

Longer than the job itself warrants. Dealers treat key replacement as a scheduled service appointment. You call, get a quote, find a time on their calendar, and if the car is not drivable you sort out the tow separately. Once you are there, the actual programming is quick, but you are still sitting in a waiting room while the car is in a queue behind everything else on the shop floor.

Q: I bought a replacement key blank online. Can I just bring that and have it programmed?

Sometimes, but there is a real risk with this generation. Not every aftermarket blank sold online for a 2000 Altima actually contains a chip that is compatible with this car's immobilizer. Some blanks look identical on the outside and are listed as fits for this vehicle, but the chip inside either does not match or is a poor clone that the car's system will reject after programming. If you already have one, bring it.

Q: My 2000 Altima starts fine but then stalls a second or two later. Is this a key problem?

That pattern, starts then immediately dies, is a classic sign that the immobilizer is not accepting the key. The engine control side gets the start signal but the security side cuts it off. It usually means the transponder chip is not being read correctly, either because the key is damaged, the chip has failed, or the key was never properly programmed to begin with. On a car this age, a worn key head with a cracked chip is not unusual.

2000 Nissan Altima Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A couple over in Mandalay Beach picked up a 2000 Nissan Altima from an overflow lot. Clean body, low drama, one key. The lot told them to figure out a spare on their own, which they figured meant a quick stop at a hardware store.

They called me after the hardware store told them they couldn't cut it. Then they called the dealer, got a number that stopped them cold, and found EZ Car Keyz online about ten minutes later.

I met them at the car before they even drove it home from the lot. The original key was right there in the ignition, which is exactly what I needed. I decoded the cut from the working key, matched a blank, and cloned the transponder data onto it so the car recognized the new key the same way it recognized the old one. No tow, no appointment, no waiting room.

The whole thing took about 20 minutes in the parking lot. They left with two keys and a lot more confidence about the car they had just bought.

The dealer quote came up again on the drive out. I told them what I charged, and one of them just laughed and said they thought I had given them the wrong number.

Nissan Altima Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I have to go to the Nissan dealer to get a replacement key for my 2000 Altima?▼

No. A mobile locksmith with the right equipment can cut and program a transponder key for this car on site, wherever it is parked. The dealer will schedule you for an appointment, and if the car is not drivable you are also arranging a tow. They block out a service window that is much longer than the actual work takes.
