A home daycare operator near the Nyeland Acres area in Oxnard had a 2001 Altima with a cracked key shell. The plastic housing had split right at the blade pivot point, and the rubber head was wearing through. She could still start it, but she was holding the thing together with tape and worrying every day that the transponder chip inside would fall out in a parking lot and she'd be stuck with kids in the car.
She called a Nissan dealer. They quoted her a full replacement key, cut and programmed, and told her the wait was about a week because they had to order the blank.
What nobody mentioned is that the internals were fine. Her 2001 Altima uses a NATS-5 system with a fixed-code Texas Instruments (now TI/Atmel) ID41 transponder chip embedded in the key head. The chip was intact. The circuit board was intact. The only failure was the shell itself.
I drove out that evening with aftermarket shells and my DAT17 Lishi. Swapped the working ID41 chip and board into a fresh housing, decoded her door lock, and cut a new NSN14 blade right there on the hood. Tested ignition, tested the doors, and the security light on the cluster did its normal blink-then-off routine.
She got her rebuilt key plus a spare. The whole job took about 25 minutes, cost a fraction of what the dealer wanted, and she never left her driveway.
