It was mid-July in the Ormond Beach area of Oxnard, and a gentleman had just finished his grocery run when his Intelligent Key stopped responding entirely. His frozen food was sitting in the back seat behind glass in that heat. He could see the car. He just couldn't get to it.

Once I got the door open, I looked at the fob before I touched anything else. He'd already done the right thing and changed the CR2032, but the backup start still wasn't working. When I cracked the fob housing open on the trunk lid, the internal antenna contact had a layer of corrosion on it, just enough to break the close-range signal the start button antenna relies on. That is a common failure point people don't know to check, and it looks fine from the outside.
I replaced the fob, programmed it through the OBD port with my diagnostic setup, and walked every function: locks, the start button pickup, remote range from across the lot. Everything confirmed.
From the time he called to the engine running was 38 minutes. His groceries made it. He asked me twice if I was sure I didn't need to go back to a shop somewhere. I told him I was standing in the parking lot the whole time.
