1999 Nissan Altima
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Do I need to tow my 1999 Altima to the dealer for a new key?

No. Dealers will often tell you to tow the vehicle in because that's how their service lane is set up. They need the car in the bay, a service writer, a parts order, and a technician with time in the schedule. For a 1999 Altima, none of that infrastructure is actually required to make a key. The key is cut to the lock. A mobile locksmith with the right decode tools handles it on the spot.

Q: What do I need to prove I own the vehicle?

A valid photo ID and proof of ownership, either your registration or your title. I verify the VIN from the dashboard plate or the door jamb sticker to confirm I'm cutting the right key for the right car. Same standard a dealer would hold you to, just handled on site in a couple of minutes rather than across a service counter.

Q: My key turns hard and sometimes doesn't come out of the ignition smoothly. Is the key worn or is it the cylinder?

Usually both, and on a 1999 Altima it's worth sorting out before one makes the other worse. A worn key accelerates wear inside the cylinder because the peaks and valleys no longer align cleanly with the tumblers. Over time the tumblers follow the worn key's profile instead of the original cut. If you've been copying the same worn key for years, every copy gets a little worse.

Q: Can a locksmith cut a key by the VIN, or does the car have to be present?

Key codes can sometimes be pulled by VIN through locksmiths who have access to the right databases, but I prefer to decode the lock directly when I'm already on site. It's faster and it accounts for any wear or prior cylinder work that might mean the lock no longer matches the original factory code. For a 1999 Altima, having the car present is never a problem since the job is done right there anyway.

1999 Nissan Altima Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was already on Upper State Street finishing another job when the call came in. A nursing student at one of the apartment complexes off that corridor had snapped her key in her door lock.

Not broken off inside the cylinder, thankfully, just snapped at the bow where the blade meets the plastic head. She had the blade piece, but there was no way to grip it well enough to turn the lock. She'd already called a dealer. They told her to tow the car in.

She didn't need a tow. She needed a locksmith.

I pulled up, extracted the broken blade from the lock without damaging the cylinder, decoded the lock with my Nissan-specific pick and decode tool, and cut her a fresh key blank to match. The whole thing took maybe twenty-five minutes. She stood in the breezeway watching like she expected it to be more complicated.

It wasn't. That's the point. A 1999 Altima key is a metal key cut to the car. No scan tool. No programming window. No appointment. The dealer quote included a tow she didn't need and a wait she couldn't afford before a shift. She paid a fraction of that, and she was back inside her car before I'd finished packing up my kit.

Nissan Altima Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I am locked out with no spare key. Can you come to me?▼

Yes. Call and I'll come directly to wherever you are on Upper State Street or anywhere else in Santa Barbara. I carry the tools and key blanks for the 1999 Altima in the van. You do not need a tow truck. You do not need to arrange a ride to a dealer. I decode the lock on site, cut a new key, and you're back in the car. That's the whole job, done where you're parked.
