It was a July afternoon in Rose Park, Oxnard. A customer called me from the parking lot of a grocery store. He was elderly, standing next to his 2017 Altima, groceries in the back seat, frozen stuff already on the clock. His Intelligent Key had gone dark inside the store and he couldn't get in. When I got there he was standing in the shade, which there wasn't much of. I got the door open using the mechanical blade from his fob, which he hadn't known was in there. Once inside, I checked the fob first. The CR2032 was completely dead, which explained the remote failure, but the bigger issue was corrosion on the internal battery contacts. Even if he'd swapped the battery himself, it probably wouldn't have come back fully. The fob needed to be replaced, not just freshened up.
I programmed the new fob through the OBD port, verified the immobilizer was talking to it correctly, walked every button, confirmed the emergency blade still matched the door lock, and tested start function twice. Then I handed it to him and let him do it himself so he knew it was real.
Thirty-eight minutes from his phone call to him backing out of that space. His frozen food made it. The dealer appointment he canceled was for the following morning, and it would have cost him a good chunk more than what he paid me.
He thanked me, then asked if I could also fix his air conditioning. I told him that one was out of my lane.
