Over by Proctor Street Plaza in Oxnard, a guy's 2017 Altima was sitting in the grocery lot with a trunk full of frozen food. July heat. He said he had maybe 30 minutes before everything in there was soup.
His Intelligent Key had quit. No response from the door handles, no chirp, nothing. He tried holding the fob against the start button for the backup procedure. Dashboard just showed "KEY NOT DETECTED" and would not crank. He is an older gentleman and he looked genuinely stressed standing next to a car he could see into but could not open.
He called the dealer. Next-day appointment. Then he called me. I was about 15 minutes out.
I got the door open, plugged my IM608 into the OBD port under the dash, and pulled the NATS pin from the BCM. His old fob's CR2032 was stone dead, but that alone would not explain the backup start failing. I cracked the fob open and found green corrosion on the internal antenna contact, right where the board meets the battery clip. That kills the passive signal the car needs even when you press the fob to the button.
New proximity fob, programmed through OBD using Hitag AES protocol, emergency key blade cut on site. I tested all five buttons, checked both front door handle touch sensors, trunk release, and remote start range from about 30 feet.
Phone call to engine running, 38 minutes. Groceries survived. That was the part he cared about.
