Q: What exactly is a transponder key and why does the 1996 Mustang need one?

I was up near Serra Cross Park in Ventura, the kind of afternoon where the whole city looks calm from up on the hill, when a call came in about a 1996 Mustang that would crank but not start. Owner had already been through the standard guesses: battery, starter, fuel. None of it.

She had gotten a replacement key cut at a hardware store a few weeks back. The cutter matched the blade fine. Car started for a while, then one day it just stopped. Cranks strong, won't fire. Classic immobilizer situation.

I pulled up to the car and she handed me both keys. The original was worn pretty badly -- the blade was still usable but the plastic head had a crack running right through where the chip sits. The hardware-store copy had the right cuts, but there was no chip in it at all. The car had been starting on the original's chip while the blade of the copy happened to line up, and eventually the original chip shifted enough in that cracked housing that the antenna in the ignition column stopped reading it reliably.

I cut a proper replacement with the correct transponder chip and programmed it to the car on site. Took about 20 minutes parked right there on the street. She had a working key in her hand before the parking meter situation became a problem.
