I was out near the Botanic Garden Area in Thousand Oaks on a Tuesday afternoon when the call came in. Guy had one key to his 2007 Mustang. That key snapped, bow end clean off, right at the ignition collar. The blade was still seated in the cylinder and the car was locked in his driveway.
First thing I did was extract the broken blade from the ignition. That part makes people nervous to watch because it looks like the kind of job that goes sideways fast. It didn't. Once the cylinder was clear, I decoded the cut from the blade, transferred it to a new key blank, and verified the cut by hand before anything touched the ignition again.
Then the programming. With all keys lost on this generation, you can't use the onboard sequence because that requires two working keys to initiate. I connected through the OBD port, cleared the old key data out of the immobilizer, and enrolled the new key. Tested it three times: turn, start, shut off, repeat. Clean every time.
He'd already called the dealer before he called me. They wanted him to tow it in, said they'd need the car for most of the day, and the quote was not friendly. He ended up paying a fraction of that, in his own driveway, in about an hour.
The tow never happened.
