I was parked off Telephone Road in North Ventura finishing up a call when my phone went off. Guy said his key snapped in the ignition of his 2011 Mustang. Blade broke clean at the shoulder. He'd already called someone else first, and that shop told him the ignition cylinder would have to be drilled, replaced, and re-keyed. New cylinder, new keys, and a bill he said made him feel sick.

He asked if I could come look before he agreed to any of that.

I got there and the fragment was still seated in the cylinder. The goal with these is always to get the broken piece out without disturbing the wafer stack, because once you damage those, you're into a cylinder replacement whether you want one or not. I used a Lishi extractor, worked it slowly around the broken piece, and pulled it clean. No scratched wafers, nothing displaced.

Then I decoded the lock. Reading each wafer position gives me the exact cut depths the lock wants, so I can cut a working key from scratch without a code card or the original key. I cut the new blade, then hooked up to the OBD port to program the transponder chip to the car's immobilizer. Ford's system has a mandatory delay built into the programming sequence, so you sit and wait it out. Can't rush it. When the security light stopped flashing and settled, I tested the key in the ignition, tested the remote functions, tested everything.

His lock was untouched. No drilling. No new cylinder. He saved a significant amount over what the first shop had quoted, and the car looked exactly the way he left it.
