She was at a restaurant in Ventura and her purse was gone. Someone grabbed it off the back of her chair while she was talking. Car keys, house keys, wallet, phone, all of it. She borrowed the hostess's phone and called the police first, then her husband, then me.
Her 2010 Mustang was sitting in the restaurant lot with no keys at all. Her husband had already called the dealer. They could order a key but it would take several business days, the car would need to be towed in, and they recommended having the locks addressed since the stolen key could still physically open the doors. The combined estimate was well over what she wanted to hear.
I drove out that evening. All-keys-lost on this car is a specific process. It is not the same as cutting a spare when you still have a working key. When a key already exists in the system, adding one is relatively quick. When there are no working keys, I have to access the immobilizer through the diagnostic port, wipe every stored key from memory, and program at least two new keys from scratch so the car will start again. One key is not enough to satisfy the procedure. The stolen remote-head key gets erased in that process. It can still slide into the door lock cylinder physically, but the immobilizer will not let the engine fire.
I decoded her lock, cut the blade to match, and had both remote-head keys programmed and tested before she finished with the officer taking her report across the parking lot.
She drove home that night. The dealer route would have meant a tow, a multi-day wait, and a bill that made her husband wince just reading it. She got two working keys, the stolen one was dead to the car, and she was back on the road the same evening it happened. That is the job I show up for.
