1997 Ford Mustang Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Got a call from a woman near Harry A. Lyon Park in Ventura. Her 1997 Mustang would crank all day but would not fire. The theft indicator light in the cluster was doing that fast flash, which on a PATS I car means one thing: the security module is not seeing a valid transponder.

She had a spare key cut years ago at a hardware store. Plain metal, no chip. Someone told her it would work. It turns the ignition fine, because mechanically the H72 blade matches. But the PATS module in the steering column reads for a 4C transponder signal during the crank cycle, and a blank key gives it nothing. So the PCM kills fuel injector pulse and the car just sits there cranking.

I decoded her door lock, cut a fresh H72-PT with the correct transponder in the head, and connected my programmer to the OBD-II port under the dash. The 1997 model uses the older PATS I protocol, so the key learn process goes through a timed security countdown of about ten minutes before it accepts a new key ID. Programmed her original key and the new one in the same session.

Then I tested. Three cold starts back to back, watching for the theft light to go solid and then off, which means the module accepted the key cleanly each time. She sat on her porch watching me start and kill her car over and over.

She thought she needed a new ignition or a tow to the dealer. It was a transponder key, done on site, for a fraction of what the dealership quoted her over the phone.
