2005 Ford Mustang
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

2005 Ford Mustang Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A tenant at an apartment complex in Westlake Village called me on a Tuesday afternoon with a problem that sounds simple until you're standing in a parking lot with no working key.

She bought her 2005 Ford Mustang used a few years back and got one key with it. Always meant to get a copy made. Never did. That day, the key blade cracked at the base and snapped clean when she tried to work the door lock. Remote head in one hand, blade stuck in the lock cylinder. Zero access, zero starts.

I got there, extracted the broken blade from the door lock, and decoded the cut from the lock cylinder itself. The key head with the transponder chip was still intact inside the cracked plastic housing, which mattered. I was able to read the chip and work with what was already there rather than running a full all-keys-lost procedure from scratch. Cut two fresh keys to the decoded bitting, transferred everything over, and programmed both to the car on site.

She watched the whole thing from about four feet away, which I like. When I showed her the chip pulled from the cracked housing, she said she had no idea there was anything inside the key at all.

Forty minutes, two working keys, and she left with a spare for the first time since she bought the car. The dealer had been mentioned in passing. She didn't go that route, and the number I gave her was a fraction of what they'd quoted her friend for a similar job on a different Ford.

If you still have the broken pieces, hang onto them. The chip in a cracked key head is salvageable more often than people expect.
