2023 Ford Mustang
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long will a replacement smart key last on a 2023 Mustang?

A properly programmed key with a quality housing and a fresh CR2450 should hold up for years. The pairing stored in the vehicle doesn't expire or degrade. Most issues owners run into down the road are physical: worn button pads, a cracked housing from being dropped, or a battery that finally gives out. We put a new battery in every key we make, so you're not starting the clock already behind.

Q: What if my new key stops working a few weeks after you program it?

Call us. We stand behind the work. That said, when a correctly programmed fob fails weeks later, the fob itself is usually the last thing to blame. On 2022 and 2023 Mustangs specifically, owners on the forums have reported a key-not-detected warning after a vehicle software update that didn't cleanly handle the stored key data. It's not a dead fob, it's a module that got confused.

Q: I have two working keys but want a third as a spare. Can you add one without erasing the others?

Yes. Adding a key when you still have working fobs in hand is the easier job. The existing keys stay registered and functional. All-keys-lost is a different procedure with more steps, but a straight add-a-key with working fobs present is clean and fast. Bring both working fobs with you so the system can confirm what's already paired before we add the new one.

Q: The Mustang's door handle touch unlock stopped working but the fob buttons still lock and unlock fine. Is the fob the problem?

Almost certainly not. If the buttons on the fob work and the vehicle starts normally, the fob is communicating fine. Passive door handle unlock is a separate circuit from button-triggered lock and unlock. On the S550 generation Mustangs, owners have tracked this down to the capacitive sensor in the door handle itself, either from contamination on the surface or a sensor that's beginning to fail. Wipe the handle face down thoroughly and retest.

2023 Ford Mustang Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

It was a July afternoon in Downtown Oxnard, the kind where the asphalt smells like it's done being patient. She was standing next to her 2023 Mustang in a hospital parking lot, pressing the fob, getting nothing. Groceries in the back seat. Frozen stuff. She could see the car.

She called the dealer first. Next available was the following afternoon. Then she called me, and I was about 20 minutes out.

When I got there she was standing in the shade of the building, watching the car like it might change its mind. I got the door open mechanically, and she slid in out of the heat while I set up at the OBD port.

The fob battery was shot, but that wasn't the whole story. The battery contact inside the fob housing had enough corrosion on it that even swapping a fresh CR2450 probably wouldn't have held. The fob itself needed to go. I had the right blank in the van, programmed the new key, and walked every function with her before I packed up.

From her phone call to the engine running was under 50 minutes. The dealer's soonest would have been the next afternoon, and the grocery bag with the ice cream had just barely held on. She laughed about it. Said it was the most productive parking lot she'd ever stood in.

Ford Mustang Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys for Ford smart fobs?▼

We use OEM-specification blanks matched to the factory FCC ID for the vehicle in front of us. This matters more than people realize. Some aftermarket fobs are built to the right physical shape but don't hold frequency tolerance well, and Ford's system is picky. We've seen cases where a fob will unlock the doors fine but the vehicle won't recognize it for starting, because the signal characteristics are just slightly off.
