Got a call from a guy near Hillcrest Center for the Arts in Thousand Oaks. His 2001 Mustang GT would crank but not fire. Dash theft light was flashing fast, which on these PATS II cars means the transceiver ring around the ignition isn't reading the transponder chip.
He had two keys. One was the original Ford H72-PT with the oval head. The other was a copy someone made at a hardware store years ago. That copy was just a metal blank, no chip at all. He'd been using it to unlock the doors and didn't realize it was the one he'd been trying to start the car with for the last half hour.
I grabbed his original key, turned it to run, and the theft light went solid for about three seconds and then went out. Fired right up. So the PATS module and the transceiver ring on the steering column were both fine. The car just needed a key that actually had a 4C chip in it.
I cut him a new H72-PT spare and programmed it using the two-key method, which is standard on 2001 PATS II Mustangs. Ten seconds in run with key one, ten seconds with key two, then the new key learns. Took about fifteen minutes total.
He thought the car was dead. It was just the wrong key in his hand the whole time.
