Got a call from a guy pulled over on the 101 shoulder right near Coast Village Road in Montecito. His 2001 Sequoia's key blade had snapped clean in the ignition. Half the blade jammed in the cylinder, the other half in his palm. He'd already called another locksmith who quoted him for a full ignition replacement, drilling included.
I showed up and went straight to the TOY43AT Lishi. That tool is made for this keyway and it can work around a broken fragment without chewing up the wafers inside. Slid the fragment out clean, then decoded the lock from the wafer positions while I was already in there. Two jobs with one tool.
Cut a fresh TOY43 blade on my mobile machine, then programmed the 4C transponder chip through the OBD port. The whole immobilizer handshake on these early Sequoias is the fixed-code system, so registration is quick once you have the right equipment. His separate remote fob (the three-button RS3200 style) was still working fine in his pocket, so I left that alone.
He kept looking at the ignition like he expected it to look different. It didn't. No drill marks, no new cylinder, no scratches on the column. Original lock, new key, same fit. He drove off with everything working the way it did that morning.
