2003 Toyota Sequoia
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How much more complicated is all-keys-lost compared to adding a spare?

Meaningfully more involved. When you've got one working key, adding a second is a relatively quick programming job because the vehicle security system already has a registered key to reference. All-keys-lost means clearing the system entirely and re-registering from zero, which takes specific tools and adds time to the job. The practical advice: get a spare made now, while the truck starts fine.

Q: Do aftermarket fobs actually work on a 2003 Sequoia, or should I stick with OEM?

Aftermarket fobs can work on this generation, but quality varies. The 2003 Sequoia is old enough that compatibility isn't usually the hard part; the issue is build quality. Owners on forums have reported aftermarket fobs where the button contacts degrade quickly or the case fits poorly enough that the battery connection gets intermittent. We carry fobs built to OEM spec, tested before we show up.

Q: My 2003 Sequoia starts fine but the fob buttons do nothing. What's going on?

Nine times out of ten on this generation: dead CR2032. The remote receiver in the truck and the ignition system are independent, so a fob with a failed battery won't affect starting at all. You'll just lose all remote functions at once. Swap the battery first. If that doesn't fix it, the fob itself may need to be re-synced or the remote receiver module may have an issue. Both are diagnosable on-site.

Q: Can I program a second fob for my 2003 Sequoia myself at home?

On this generation Toyota, there is an onboard registration sequence that some owners have completed themselves when they already have one working programmed key in hand. It involves a specific sequence of ignition and door-lock steps within a timed window. It doesn't always work on the first attempt, the timing is strict, and if you're starting from zero keys it's not an option at all since you can't get into the sequence without a working key to begin.

2003 Toyota Sequoia Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy out in Heritage Valley called me on a Tuesday afternoon. He'd lost his only key somewhere between his driveway and a trail he'd been walking near the edge of Fillmore. He retraced the whole path twice. Nothing.

His 2003 Sequoia was sitting in the driveway and he needed it for work the next morning. He'd already called the dealer. They told him he'd need to tow it in, wait for parts, and come back. Multi-day job, their words.

I showed up with my tools and started at the door lock cylinder, reading the cuts to get the blade profile without a working key in hand. Once I had the mechanical decode, I cut a replacement blade to match, verified it in the door, and moved to the ignition. Then I connected through the OBD port and ran the immobilizer reset process to clear the old key from memory and register the new one. The fob got paired the same session.

He was standing in his driveway watching the whole thing. When the engine turned over, he just nodded and said something like "I didn't think that was going to work out here."

It took about 50 minutes, start to finish. He saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer quoted, and he didn't have to tow a running truck anywhere.

All-keys-lost on a 2003 Sequoia sounds like a big deal. It's a routine field job with the right equipment.

Toyota Sequoia Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to replace a key for a 2003 Toyota Sequoia?▼

Call a mobile locksmith first. Going straight to the dealer on a Sequoia this age usually means scheduling time, potentially towing if you have no key at all, and paying separately for the fob, the cut blade, programming, and diagnostic time. With EZ Car Keyz, the job comes to you in Heritage Valley or wherever the truck is sitting, and the price covers everything in one call. Give us a ring for exact pricing on your situation.
