2012 Toyota Sequoia Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Got a call from a Goleta customer, right on the edge of Isla Vista, about a 2012 Sequoia that wouldn't start. She had two keys. One was worn down to nearly nothing on the blade, the other had a crack running straight through the plastic head, right over where the transponder chip sits.
She'd been using the cracked one for months. Then one morning it just stopped working mid-week. The Sequoia would crank, almost catch, then die. She thought it was a fuel issue at first. Her neighbor thought the battery was going.
I got there and ran the ignition test. The chip in the cracked key was reading inconsistently, just enough signal sometimes to crank the engine but not enough to clear the immobilizer. Classic fractured chip behavior. The worn backup key was so shallow on the blade that it wasn't turning the tumblers cleanly either, which made diagnosis messier until I checked both separately.
Cut a new key from the door lock code, programmed the transponder, and tested it through several cold start cycles right there in her driveway. The Sequoia fired up clean every time.
The dealer had already been called. They wanted her to tow it in, quoted her a number she described as "a lot," and said it would be a few days out before they could even look at it. She called me instead. I was done before she finished her coffee.
