A woman who works near Old Town Goleta texted me on a Tuesday. She had a 2014 Sequoia and one working key. Her husband had the other one and it had been sitting in a drawer for a year after the battery died. She figured a dead battery was a dead battery. Popped in a fresh CR2016, nothing. That bow was keeping the CR2016 from seating with full pressure. I bent the contact back, seated a fresh CR2016, and the lock button immediately synced with the truck.

But I did not stop there, because a resync is not a replacement. I pulled my diagnostic unit, connected to the OBD port, and verified the fob was properly registered to the immobilizer, confirmed the rolling code was current, and tested all four buttons. Everything checked clean.

Then I cut a second key for her because that was the actual reason she called. She had been meaning to get a spare for two years. I programmed it, cut the blade, tested every button on both fobs, and verified both keys started the truck.

She was back at her desk before her lunch hour ended. The dealer would have had her truck overnight at minimum.
