I got a call from someone parked near the old citrus packing area in Downtown Fillmore. He had his 2005 Sequoia, his remote, and a problem: the fob had stopped responding to anything. Lock, unlock, nothing. He'd already swapped the CR2032 himself, seated it correctly, and still got no response from any of the four buttons.
I met him on site. First thing I did was test the ignition key separately, because on the 2005 Sequoia the remote and the ignition transponder key are two distinct pieces of hardware. His ignition key was fine. The car started, ran, no warning lights. The problem was isolated to the remote itself.
I checked the fob internals. The contacts on the circuit board had oxidation from what looked like a slow battery leak at some point, probably an old cell that sat in there too long. The board wasn't salvageable.
Cut and programmed a replacement remote on the spot. Walked every button, tested range from across the parking lot, confirmed the ignition key still read correctly after the session. He was back to fully working in about 25 minutes.
He mentioned he'd called the Toyota dealer first. They told him to bring it in, said it could be same-day or could require an order. No estimate on timing, and the price they quoted was a good chunk more than what he paid me. Mobile, done at his truck, no tow, no waiting room.
