Got a call from a guy out near a campground on the edge of Fillmore, close to the Mountain View neighborhood. He had a 2005 Toyota Sequoia, all doors locked, and his only remote had stopped working mid-trip. The key blade still turned the ignition fine, but the remote buttons were dead. No lock, no unlock, no hatch release. He had been reaching across from the driver side to manually pop locks for his kids all morning.
He had walked to the camp host to borrow a phone.
I drove out there and started with the obvious. Cracked open the HYQ12BBX remote on his tailgate. The CR2032 was corroded on one side, green crust on the negative contact inside the fob housing. Cleaned the battery terminals on the board, dropped in a fresh CR2032, and re-seated the rubber button pad.
Then the programming check. On these first-gen Sequoias, the remote is a standalone RF unit, FCC ID HYQ12BBX, separate from the transponder in the key blade. You can re-sync the remote with a door-lock cycling procedure if it loses its pairing, no scan tool needed for just the remote side. His re-paired on the second cycle.
Walked every button. Lock, unlock, panic, hatch glass. All responding from 30 feet out.
He thought the whole key assembly was shot. It was a bad battery and some corrosion. Took maybe 15 minutes, done on a dirt road with no tow truck in sight.
