Over in Santa Barbara Airport in Goleta, a woman with a 2016 Sequoia had been fighting her ignition for weeks. Some mornings the key turned fine. Other mornings she sat in the parking lot by the yoga studio wiggling and jiggling, trying to get the TOY43 blade to catch. She finally called after the dealer quoted her a full ignition cylinder replacement with new keys and a reprogram.
I checked the cylinder and the wafers were the problem. Brass wafers in these TOY43 locks wear down over time and start floating loose, which makes the key bind in the housing. The lock itself was fine.
Before I touched anything mechanical, I connected my ACDP to the 93C56 EEPROM on the immobilizer ECU (the ID box, Toyota part 89780-0C161) and backed up the security data. If something goes sideways during a mechanical repair, that backup means I'm not chasing a bricked immobilizer.
Then I decoded the cylinder, pulled the worn wafers, dropped in fresh ones, and cut a new key matched to the repaired lock. The 4D-67 chip programmed through OBD with no issues. The remote head buttons re-synced on the first try.
Her ignition turns smooth now. The key slides in clean. She didn't need a new cylinder, new keys, or a full reprogram. She needed someone to fix the part that was actually worn.
