A guy pulled into a parking area near Channel Islands Harbor and waved me down almost as soon as I arrived. He had his 2000 Lexus ES key in one hand and a look on his face that said he already knew it was bad.
The blade had snapped inside the ignition cylinder. Clean break, right at the shoulder. Half the key still seated in the cylinder, the other half in his palm. He had tried a fingernail, a toothpick, and apparently a paperclip before calling me.
I extracted the broken fragment using a dedicated pick tool, working slow so I did not disturb the wafer positions inside the cylinder. Once the fragment came out clean, I decoded the cut from the lock itself and used that to cut a fresh blade on site.
The replacement key also needed the transponder registered so the car would actually start, and the fob portion programmed so the lock and unlock buttons would work again. Both done through the OBD port without pulling the dash or touching the cylinder.
He was back on the road in under an hour from when he called. He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a multi-day turnaround and a tow, plus the dealer price. He paid a fraction of that, standing next to his own car in a parking lot by the harbor.
