I got a call from a collision center over in Carriage Square in Oxnard. A customer had brought his 2001 Lexus ES in for body work after a fender incident, and when repairs were done, the shop called a locksmith to sort out a key that had gotten lost in the process. That locksmith ran a programming attempt, got an error partway through, and left. The car would not accept any new key registration after that. The collision center was stuck, the customer was stuck, and now it was my call.
When I got there, the system was sitting in a fault state from the incomplete attempt. It was not going to respond to a standard programming sequence. I had my bench tool with me, which is what you need when the module has been partially touched and needs to be worked on directly rather than through the OBD port. I pulled the relevant module, read the EEPROM, cleared out the corrupted registration data, and rebuilt the key table clean.
Once the fault state was gone, the new remote head key registered on the first attempt. I cycled through the lock, unlock, and remaining button functions in the parking lot to confirm everything was talking to the receiver correctly. Then I walked one of the shop guys through what had happened so they would know why the first attempt went sideways. It was not a mystery, just a tool limitation that turned a routine job into a recovery job.
The whole thing ran about 90 minutes on site. The customer paid a fraction of what the dealer quoted for a flatbed tow plus a multi-day turnaround. The shop had the car out that afternoon.
