I got a call out to the College area of Ventura from a guy who had already been through it. Another locksmith had come out, done what looked like a smart key job on his 2017 Lexus ES, and taken his money. The engine would crank, catch for a second or two, and then die. Every time. The 2017 ES smart key registration has a timed security sequence built into it. If you rush the process, disconnect too early, or do not let the system complete its handshake, the fob writes to temporary memory and not permanent. The car sees the key long enough to let the engine fire, then the security system catches that the registration never fully committed and kills it. Cranks, runs two seconds, stops. Classic incomplete learn. Not a dead module. Not a bad fob. A job that was not finished.
I connected at the OBD port, cleared the failed registration attempt, and ran a clean smart key learn from scratch. Let the full security timer run. No shortcuts. Confirmed the key was permanently written before I disconnected anything. Then I did three consecutive start tests standing right there on the street. Clean start, clean run, no cutoff.
