I was already wrapping up another call near Wagon Wheel on a Saturday evening when the message came in. A couple had just walked out after a night at the theater and their 2005 Lexus ES was sitting there not responding to the fob at all. No door unlock, nothing from the handle sensors, push-button start wasn't seeing the key. They figured it was a Monday problem and were ready to call a rideshare home.

The fob was the factory 4-button unit, CR1632 inside. When I popped it open, the battery wasn't dead so much as it was slightly unseated, probably from being dropped at some point. The contact had a small bend on it that was breaking connection intermittently. Straightened the clip, seated a fresh CR1632, cleaned the contact points, and snapped it back together.
Then I walked every function. Touch unlock on both door handles, the lock button on the handle, all four buttons, and finally push-button start. Everything came back on the first try.
They didn't need a new fob, didn't need a trip to the dealer, and didn't need to leave the car in a parking lot until Monday. That's the part I like about stocking the right batteries and shells for these: when the fix is small, I can confirm it on the spot and they're driving home the same night.
