I was parked in the Wilson neighborhood of Oxnard when she walked out of the dog groomer and held up her key like it had personally offended her. The remote side was completely dead. Car started fine, but no lock, no unlock, no panic. She'd already tried squeezing the buttons harder, which is what we all do even though we know it won't help.

I pulled the battery first. It was a CR2032 sitting in a CR2016 slot - slightly thicker, not making clean contact with both terminals. Someone had swapped it at some point, probably at a pharmacy counter, and grabbed the wrong size. I seated a proper CR2016, tested all three buttons. Remote came right back.
The transponder was never the issue. The car had been reading the key the whole time. It was just the battery contact the entire time.
She laughed a little, said she'd been babying that key for two weeks thinking it was dying. I told her it happens constantly on this generation because the two battery sizes look almost identical in the packaging.
She paid for the service call and a fresh CR2016. Walked back in to pick up her dog. I was back on the road in under ten minutes.
