It was a weekday evening in Oxnard, out near the Victoria Estates area. A woman called me from the parking lot of a medical office. Her father had just finished an appointment with a specialist and she had him in a wheelchair next to a 2006 Lexus ES that would not respond to anything. I got there and started with the basics before touching any tools. The fob had the right battery in it, recently replaced she said. But when I opened the fob housing, the CR1632 was slightly cocked and the contact plate had visible oxidation on it, that dull film you get when moisture finds its way in. The chip inside was fine. The battery was fine. The connection between them was not.
I cleaned the contact, seated a new CR1632 correctly, closed it up, and held it to the button. The car saw it immediately. From there I tested every function, door handles, lock, unlock, the remaining buttons, confirmed the start system was recognizing the fob at normal range and not just at contact distance.
She did not need a new fob. She did not need programming. She needed someone who would open the thing and actually look instead of jumping straight to a replacement sale.
Her father was home that evening. She saved a good chunk compared to what a dealer visit plus a new fob would have run her, and she got it done in a parking lot in about forty minutes.
