Guy was in Ventura visiting his parents over in the Poinsettia neighborhood. Drove his 2018 Lexus ES down from the Bay Area and wanted a spare smart key before the drive back. Not an emergency backup to sit in a drawer. A daily-carry fob he could trust.
He asked me straight up whether an aftermarket key would hold up against the OEM. Fair question.
I showed him both side by side on the hood of his car. The OEM fob is part number 89904-30A30 with the Lexus logo stamped on the housing. The aftermarket blank I carry uses the same board layout, same 8A transponder chip, same TOY40 blade profile, same four-button shell. Weight feels the same in your hand. Button click is the same. The only visible difference is no logo on the back.
I programmed it through the OBD port, registered it to his immobilizer, cut the emergency insert blade to his door lock code, and tested every function. Lock, unlock, trunk, panic. Then the handle touch-unlock on all four doors and the push-button start from cold. Everything matched his original.
He stood there comparing the two fobs in his palms like he was trying to find the catch.
Where aftermarket goes sideways is cheap sourcing. Bad batches exist. I test every unit before it goes in a customer's hand, and anything that feels off goes back. His spare works the same as his factory key, and he paid a fraction of what the dealer wanted.
