A guy visiting family out in Casitas Springs called me around mid-morning. He'd driven down from out of town for the holidays in his 2018 Lexus ES, and somewhere between parking the night before and walking out the next morning, the fob had gone quiet. Door handles weren't waking up, the dash showed a key-not-detected warning, and he was standing in the driveway holding a very expensive-looking piece of plastic that had stopped doing anything useful.
He wanted a second key cut anyway - something his wife could carry. He asked me the question I get a lot on Lexus jobs: OEM or aftermarket, and does it actually matter?
I gave him the same honest answer I give everyone. The factory-issued fob from the dealer has the Lexus badge on the housing and a price to match. A quality aftermarket fob carries the same transponder technology, the same blade profile, the same four-button layout, the same CR1632 battery. The circuit has to match the factory FCC ID or it won't pair - that's non-negotiable. Where aftermarket goes wrong is cheap sourcing, not the concept itself. I test every batch I bring in and return anything that doesn't perform cleanly across a full function check.
I popped the existing fob on the hood to check it first. The CR1632 was sitting slightly off-center, one contact had a faint oxidation layer, and the battery read low. Cleaned the contacts, seated a fresh name-brand CR1632, and the fob came back immediately. Touch unlock on both front handles, all four buttons responding, start button reading the key without hesitation.
Then I programmed the second key - aftermarket blank, paired through the diagnostic port, cut to the vehicle, walked through every function with him watching. Both keys working, both verified.
He had what he came for: a spare his wife could actually carry daily, not a backup sitting in a junk drawer. The dealer conversation never really came up after he saw the total.
