2015 Lexus ES
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a smart key and how does it start my ES?

The smart key your 2015 Lexus ES uses communicates with the vehicle wirelessly. When you approach and touch the door handle, the car detects the fob's signal and unlocks. Starting the engine works through a push-button on the dash: the car verifies the fob is inside the cabin before it lets the engine turn over. The fob also has a mechanical blade folded inside it.

Q: My Lexus says it cannot detect the key. What should I try first?

Hold the fob directly against the start button and press. This works because the vehicle can power the fob's transponder chip passively, the same way a keycard reader works, even when the fob battery is completely dead. If the car starts that way, your only problem is a dead CR1632. Swap it for a name-brand cell and you are good. If holding the fob to the button does not work, the battery is probably not the issue.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2015 ES. Can I program it myself at home?

No. There is no button sequence or ignition-turn trick that adds a smart key to this vehicle. Programming requires diagnostic equipment that talks to the vehicle through the OBD port. If you already bought the fob, that is fine: bring it along when you call and I can program it on site. Just make sure the factory FCC ID on the fob matches what your vehicle takes before you buy, because not every fob marketed as compatible actually is.

Q: I only have one key left for my ES. What happens if I lose it?

All-keys-lost on a 2015 Lexus ES smart key system is a more involved job than a standard spare. When no working key is present, the vehicle's security system has to be accessed and reset through the diagnostic port before a new fob can be registered. The process takes longer than adding a spare alongside an existing working key, and it does require professional equipment.

2015 Lexus ES Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

There is an urgent care clinic near the edge of East Ventura, and I have gotten calls from that parking lot more than once. This one was a little different.

The woman who called had done her homework. She had already looked up my license number on the BSIS website before dialing. Her previous locksmith had handed her a receipt with no company name, no license, and a phone number that stopped working shortly after. She was not going to do that again. When I pulled up in the van with the name on the side, she actually said she appreciated seeing it.

She needed a spare key for her 2015 Lexus ES. Her original was working fine, but she had learned the hard way that having one key for a car with this kind of security system is a bad position to be in. She was right about that.

I programmed the new fob through the diagnostic port using proper equipment and the right data channels for this platform. The original key stayed enrolled. The new one went right in alongside it. No fault codes left behind in the system, everything clean.

She got a real receipt. Company name, license number, a phone number that will still work next year. The dealer had quoted her significantly more and a several-day wait. She was back inside the urgent care within the hour.

Lexus ES Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

My key broke in the door lock. Can you get it out?▼

Yes. The 2015 ES uses an emergency insert blade built into the smart key fob for exactly this situation, and that blade can break in the door lock if it is forced at a bad angle or if the lock is stiff from lack of use. Getting the broken piece out without damaging the lock cylinder is standard extraction work. Once it is out, I decode the lock and cut a new blade to match.
