Over in the Montalvo neighborhood in Ventura, an ES owner flagged me down on a Saturday morning. She had one working smart key left and it was acting up. Intermittent "No Key Detected" on the dash, random refusals at the push button, and the trunk release had stopped responding from outside the car entirely.
She had already been to the dealer. They quoted her for a full replacement fob plus programming and told her it would be a leave-it-with-us situation. She drove home on her one flaky key instead.
I started with the fob itself. Popped the HYQ14FBA open on her front steps. The CR1632 tested at 2.7 volts, low enough to cause exactly these symptoms. But swapping in a fresh cell only half-fixed it. Range came back, trunk button worked again, but the push-to-start still hesitated on the first press about one out of three tries.
So I connected to OBD with my IM608 Pro, pulled into the smart key ECU, and checked registration status. Her fob was registered but the signal response was sluggish in the system log. I re-registered the same fob, cleared the codes, and ran the full walk-around. Every door handle, lock, unlock, trunk, panic, and three cold push-to-starts in a row.
That hesitation was gone. She kept her original key, got it working right, and spent a fraction of what the dealer wanted.
