Got a call around 8am from a real estate agent near Centennial Plaza in Oxnard. She had a showing at 9, and her 2002 ES300 would crank but not fire. Key went in, turned fine, starter spun, nothing. Classic immobilizer rejection.
I pulled up to her office lot in about 25 minutes. The SECURITY light on the dash was solid, not blinking, which on these third-gen ES300s (XV30 chassis) usually means the transponder handshake between the 4C chip and the immobilizer ECU failed mid-read. Her remote head key shell was cracked right along the seam near the blade pivot, and the glass transponder pellet inside had shifted just enough to throw the read distance off.
I decoded the lock cylinder with my Lishi TOY48, confirmed the cuts, and set up a fresh HYQ1512V blank with a new 4C chip. Cut the blade, registered the transponder through the OBD port on the driver side kick panel, and swapped in a fresh CR1616 while I was at it. Whole thing, hands on car to engine running, was maybe 20 minutes.
She sat in the driver seat, turned the key, and the car caught on the first crank. She just nodded and looked at the clock. 8:47am. Made the showing with time to spare.
Dealer route on these would have meant a tow and a wait measured in days, not minutes.
