La Conchita is a tight little stretch of PCH between the hills and the water, and I got a call out there from a guy visiting his parents for the holidays. He had a 2011 Lexus ES and a spare key question that was actually a good one: does the aftermarket blank perform the same as what the dealer sells?
He wasn't asking because he was cheap. He wanted a second fob for daily carry, not something to toss in a drawer and forget. He'd already been quoted a number at the dealer that made him pause, and he wanted a straight answer before he committed.
Here's what I told him, and it's the same thing I tell everyone: the quality of the blank matters more than the logo on the housing. I source aftermarket fobs I've tested across a large run of Lexus and Toyota jobs. The circuit layout, the button travel, the battery contact fitment with the CR1632, all of it has to meet the same standard I'd hold an OEM part to. When the sourcing is right, the daily-use difference is zero. The only thing missing is the Lexus mark on the face.
We paired the new fob on site through the OBD port, confirmed all four buttons, walked the door handles, verified the start button recognized the key from normal carry distance. Done in under an hour on his parents' street.
He saved a good chunk compared to the dealer route, and he left with a key he'll actually use.
