A woman at the dry cleaner off Telegraph in the East Ventura neighborhood flagged me down after finding my number online. Her 2013 ES 350 had a smart key from another locksmith that was failing after about eight days.
Mornings it started fine. By afternoon the push-to-start button would just flash "Key Not Detected" on the multi-info display and sit there. She thought the car had an electrical problem. The car was fine.
I pulled her fob apart on the counter inside and read the chip with my VVDI2. The other shop had programmed a 4D-series transponder chip instead of the 8A that this ES requires. The older chip can pass the initial registration handshake on some Lexus smart ECUs, specifically the smart key ECU on board 89990-33382, but it fails the deeper rolling-code verification that DST-AES runs after a few drive cycles. That is why it worked for a week and then silently got rejected.
I programmed a new HYQ14FBA with the correct 8A chip matched to her car's smart ECU, cut a fresh emergency insert blade to the door code, and swapped in a new CR1632 because hers was reading low. Tested push-to-start from every seat position, cycled all four buttons, checked that the walk-away auto-lock triggered at the right distance.
Months later, still working. The difference between a key that lasts and one that dies after a week is the chip generation inside the fob. That is a detail you either know or you don't.
