Out in Juanamaria, I got a call from a guy who had already spent two weeks going back and forth with a Lexus dealer over his 2012 ES. He wasn't locked out. The car started fine most mornings. The problem was the driver's door handle touch unlock. Walk up, touch the handle, nothing. Then the next day it works. Then it doesn't. Dealer visit one: they told him the fob battery was low. He replaced the CR1632 himself. Same behavior. Dealer visit two: they said they'd need to keep the car and run a full diagnosis. He had work. He couldn't leave it.

When I got to his driveway, I asked him to show me the fob. He handed it over and I popped it open on the hood of the ES. The CR1632 he'd installed was a store-brand cell and it was seated fine, but one of the battery contact clips had a slight inward bend, probably from when the original dead battery was pried out with a key tip instead of a plastic tool. Just enough to lose contact under vibration.
I straightened the clip, cleaned the contact points, and reseated a fresh name-brand cell. Then I walked every function: touch unlock on both handles, the lock button, unlock button, and the other two buttons on the fob. All four came back clean. Did three start cycles to confirm the vehicle was reading the key consistently at normal distances.
He didn't need a new fob. He didn't need a dealer diagnostic day. He needed someone to look at the thing that was actually wrong. The dealer comparison came up at the end when he asked what I charged. He just shook his head.
