Got a call from a guy over in the Midtown neighborhood in Ventura. He had a 2010 Lexus ES 350 sitting in his driveway that another locksmith had already touched. The other tech sold him a new HYQ14AAB fob, cut the emergency blade, and left. Problem was, the engine would crank for about two seconds and then die. Classic immobilizer kill. The previous locksmith told him the smart key ECU was fried and walked.
The ECU was fine. What happened is the other tech rushed the Lexus security registration. On the fifth-gen ES 350, the smart key system runs Texas Instruments DST80 encryption through the smart key computer (board 271451-0140). The registration sequence includes a seed-key calculation and a timed write period. If you skip the timer or lose connection mid-process, the key writes temporarily but never commits to permanent memory. The car sees it on the next start attempt and shuts down fuel.
I verified the blade cut with my TOY48 Lishi, connected through OBD, and cleared the half-written registration. Ran a clean smart key learn cycle with the full security countdown. The IM608 confirmation screen came back solid. Three consecutive cold starts, all clean.
He had already paid someone else for a job that was never finished. I made sure this one was actually done, on site, for a good chunk less than what the dealer quoted him on the phone.
