I was called out to a parking lot near the Midtown Ventura area for a 2010 Lexus ES owner who was frustrated before I even arrived. He'd already paid another locksmith to program a replacement smart key. The key started the car once. Then it stopped working entirely. The first locksmith told him the immobilizer module was bad and stopped returning calls.

The module was fine. What actually happened was the previous tech rushed the registration sequence. The Lexus smart key system on these has a timed security handshake built into the learning process. If you don't let that sequence run to completion, the key writes temporarily, the car starts once or maybe twice on residual, and then the registration drops out of permanent memory. You end up with a fob the car doesn't fully recognize.
I cleared the incomplete registration, connected through the OBD port, and ran a clean key learn with the full security timer counted out properly. When the confirmation came through, I tested the new fob on three consecutive start cycles, walked every button, and checked the door handle touch unlock on both sides.
It worked the way it was supposed to work the first time.
He didn't say much. He was tired of talking about it. He just wanted to drive home.
