The 2009 ES has an emergency blade tucked inside the smart fob for exactly this situation, and if that blade gets forced into a door lock and snaps, that is a real problem but not an unrecoverable one. I extract the broken piece from the lock without pulling the cylinder, then decode the lock to get the correct cut profile, and cut a new blade to match. The fob housing itself stays intact through all of this. No need to replace the whole smart key assembly unless the electronics inside took damage from whatever caused the break in the first place.

What exactly is a smart key and how is it different from a regular key?

The fob your 2009 Lexus ES uses does not go into an ignition cylinder. You carry it, the car senses it when you are near the door handles, and you start the car with a button on the dash. Inside the fob is a transponder that talks to the vehicle security system and an RF transmitter that handles lock and unlock. There is also a mechanical blade folded inside for emergencies like a dead car battery when you need to physically unlock the door.

It has four buttons total. Lock, unlock, and the other two. If one function stops working while others still work, that points to a specific circuit on the fob board rather than a total failure, and sometimes it is repairable rather than a full replacement.

This generation has a backup antenna built into the button area that can power the transponder inside the fob passively, even with a completely dead battery. If pressing the fob directly to the button does nothing, the problem is either the fob electronics, the vehicle's antenna or reception module, or an incomplete key registration from a previous service. At that point it needs a diagnostic read, not a battery swap.

I bought a replacement fob online. Can you just program it, or does it have to be a specific fob?

This comes up constantly. The short answer: it depends on what you bought.

The 2009 ES uses the factory fob with a specific FCC authorization. Aftermarket fobs vary a lot in quality, and some will pair for remote functions but fail the security handshake for push-button start. That is how you end up with a fob that locks and unlocks but the car will not start with it, which is exactly the partial-registration problem I described above.

If you have the fob in hand already, bring it. I can tell you on site whether it is going to work before you spend money on programming. If it will not clear the security handshake, a factory-spec replacement is the move. Either way, programming has to be done through the diagnostic port. There is no self-programming sequence on this vehicle.

How many keys can the 2009 Lexus ES hold in memory, and does adding a second one wipe the first?
