Got a call from a guy near Oxnard College with a 2009 Lexus ES 350 that wouldn't start. He'd already been through it once before with a locksmith off one of those cheap Google ads. That tech had shown up, partially programmed an HYQ14AAB, and left. The fob would lock and unlock the doors, but push-to-start sat there dead. No crank. Dashboard just showed "Key not detected" every time he pressed the button.
He found me through Google Guaranteed. First question out of his mouth: how do I know you're legit. Fair. I gave him my BSIS license number, LCO 6792, and he looked it up on the California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services site while we were still on the phone. I'm also NASTF registered, which gives me access to factory security PINs that unlicensed operators can't pull.
I drove out and connected my Smart Pro to the OBD-II port. The previous tech had written the fob to the body ECU but never completed the immobilizer registration on the smart key ECU, board 271451-0140. That is a two-step process on these cars and skipping the second half is exactly why push-to-start stayed dead.
Full re-registration, all four buttons verified, push-to-start confirmed, walked every door handle for touch lock and unlock. He just sat in the driver's seat pressing the start button a few extra times like he was waiting for it to quit again.
Came out to a fraction of what the dealer quoted him.
