2009 Lexus ES
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a smart key and how is it different from a regular key?

The fob your 2009 Lexus ES uses does not go into an ignition cylinder. You carry it, the car senses it when you are near the door handles, and you start the car with a button on the dash. Inside the fob is a transponder that talks to the vehicle security system and an RF transmitter that handles lock and unlock.

Q: My Lexus is showing a key-not-detected warning. What should I try first?

Hold the fob directly against the start button face and press. This generation has a backup antenna built into the button area that can power the transponder inside the fob passively, even with a completely dead battery. If the car starts that way, your fob is fine and you just need a fresh CR1632. Use a name-brand cell.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online. Can you just program it, or does it have to be a specific fob?

This comes up constantly. The short answer: it depends on what you bought. The 2009 ES uses the factory fob with a specific FCC authorization. Aftermarket fobs vary a lot in quality, and some will pair for remote functions but fail the security handshake for push-button start. That is how you end up with a fob that locks and unlocks but the car will not start with it, which is exactly the partial-registration problem I described above.

Q: How many keys can the 2009 Lexus ES hold in memory, and does adding a second one wipe the first?

The system holds multiple fobs. Adding a second key does not erase the first one, as long as the registration is done correctly through the all-keys-present procedure. The existing fob has to be present and re-registered alongside the new one or it loses authorization. Where people get into trouble is when they hand a car off and the previous owner still has a fob that works.

2009 Lexus ES Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was out in South Winds when the call came in. Guy had already been through it once with someone else.

He found a cheap locksmith through one of those sponsored ads, paid a significant amount, and ended up with a fob that would unlock the car but the push-button start would not respond to it. The car just sat there ignoring him every time he hit the button. He had to call a tow. That is when he found me.

First thing he asked on the phone was how to know I was legit before I showed up. Fair. I gave him my BSIS license number right there. He looked it up on the state website while we were still talking. That took maybe ninety seconds and he was satisfied.

When I got to him, the issue was clear. The other tech had registered the fob but the security handshake had not completed cleanly. The vehicle was seeing the fob for passive entry but not authorizing it for start. Partial registrations like that happen when someone uses the wrong tool or cuts the procedure short.

I cleared what was there and ran a full registration sequence from scratch. Walked every function after: door handle touch unlock on both sides, the start button response with the fob at normal carry distance, all four buttons. Everything came back clean.

He did not need a new fob. He needed the job done right the first time. He saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer quoted him for the same correction, and he was back on the road before it got dark.

Lexus ES Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

My key broke in the door lock. Can you get it out?▼

Yes. The 2009 ES has an emergency blade tucked inside the smart fob for exactly this situation, and if that blade gets forced into a door lock and snaps, that is a real problem but not an unrecoverable one. I extract the broken piece from the lock without pulling the cylinder, then decode the lock to get the correct cut profile, and cut a new blade to match. The fob housing itself stays intact through all of this.
