In the Blackstock neighborhood of Oxnard, a woman called me about her 2022 Lexus ES. She had bought it used with one key, kept meaning to get a spare, and then the fob housing cracked along the seam. When she tried the emergency blade for manual entry, it snapped off inside the door lock. She was holding the two halves of the housing in one hand and had no working way into the car.
When I got there, I pulled the blade fragment from the lock first, then decoded the cylinder. The transponder chip inside the cracked housing was still intact and readable, which mattered. Because that chip was good, I could transfer it into a fresh housing and skip a full all-keys-lost reset. That reset adds time because the system runs a timed sequence before it accepts new key data. Skipping it when you legitimately can is the difference between 45 minutes and closer to an hour and a half.
I rebuilt her original fob into a new shell using the salvaged board and chip, cut a fresh blade to match, and registered a second smart key while I was already in the system. She went from zero keys to two working fobs, both tested door-to-door and at the start button before I left.
The dealer had quoted her one price for the job regardless of whether she brought a fob or not. Our total came out to a fraction of that, and she didn't have to arrange a tow or take time off work. If your fob is cracked but the internals survived, that chip is worth saving.
