I was over in Silver Strand on a Tuesday morning, parked off the main drag near the beach access, when the call came in. Owner of a 2001 Lexus RX, said her remote head key stopped locking the doors and she was worried the whole key had gone bad. She had already looked up dealer pricing and was bracing for it.
She met me at her car. I asked the first question I always ask: does the car start? Yes, no problem. That told me something right away. If the transponder side of the key had failed, the car would not crank. The fact that it started fine meant the remote side was the issue, not the key as a whole.
I pulled the fob open and the battery was a CR1632. Slightly thicker than spec. Somebody, at some point, had put in what they had on hand. It was making contact most of the time but not reliably. Swapped in the correct CR1616, snapped the case back together, walked every button. Lock, unlock, the third button. All solid. Checked the range from across the lot. Still solid.
She mentioned the dealer had quoted her a full replacement and programming. Understandable, because over the phone with no diagnosis that might be exactly what it needs. But sometimes it is a battery that is one size off.
She was back inside before the marine layer had even burned off.
