2004 Lexus RX
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long does programming actually take once you are at my car?

Spare key with a working key present: the programming portion itself runs a few minutes once we are connected. Total on-site time is usually under 30 minutes including cutting, enrolling the transponder, and confirming the remote functions. All-keys-lost is a different situation. The vehicle security system on this generation has a timed delay built into the relearn process before it will accept new key registration. That adds time you cannot skip.

Q: Can you get here faster than I could get an appointment at the dealer?

Almost certainly. Dealers schedule around their shop calendar, parts availability, and technician time. If they need to order the blank or the fob body, that wait gets added on top of the appointment lead time. We carry blanks for the 2004 RX on the truck and handle it in a single same-day visit. From your call to a working key in your hand is typically measured in hours, not days.

Q: My 2004 RX starts fine but the remote buttons stopped working. Do I need a whole new key?

Not necessarily. On a remote head key, the transponder and the remote are in the same housing but they function independently. If the car starts, the transponder side is doing its job. Dead or dying remote buttons on these almost always come down to three things: a weak CR2016, a cracked solder joint on the circuit board inside the fob from years of drops, or a corroded battery contact.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2004 RX. Can I program it myself?

The remote portion of this key has an onboard sync procedure that some owners have completed themselves, as long as you still have a working key to initiate it. It involves a specific door lock and ignition sequence, and it does work on this generation when conditions are right. The transponder side is a separate matter.

2004 Lexus RX Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Got a call from a woman in Oxnard, not far from The Collection, who hadn't driven the freeway in years. She made that clear right away. The nearest Lexus dealer was a highway drive she wasn't going to make, and her late husband had always been the one who handled anything car-related. Now she was down to one key on her 2004 RX and it had started acting up.

I showed up at her driveway that morning. The remote head key was the original, and it had been on a heavy keychain for twenty years. The blade was worn enough that I decoded the lock to get an accurate cut rather than copying what was left. Cut a fresh key blank to match, confirmed the transponder enrolled correctly through the OBD port, then ran the remote sync. The factory fob with the original FCC ID paired back up without any trouble.

She watched from the doorway for most of it. When I walked up with two working keys she looked a little surprised, like she expected it to take longer or involve a tow truck.

She stayed home. Didn't touch the freeway. Saved a good chunk compared to the dealer's single-key quote, and that quote didn't include getting the car there in the first place.

Lexus RX Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What if I need a Lexus key after hours or on the weekend?▼

Call us. Lexus dealer service departments run limited hours on Saturdays and generally nothing on Sundays. Lose your only key on a Friday evening and you are looking at the car sitting until Monday, minimum, assuming the dealer has the right blank in stock when you get there. We work nights and weekends, and we come to you. Owners stranded after hours on a 2004 RX have no real dealer option until the week resets.
