2007 Lexus RX
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long does the programming take once you're at my car?

If you have a working key and just need a spare added, it's quick. The actual registration is a matter of minutes once I'm connected. All-keys-lost takes longer. The vehicle security system on this generation has a built-in delay after a reset before it will accept new key data. That window runs roughly 15 to 20 minutes on its own, so total on-car time for an all-keys-lost job is usually 30 to 45 minutes start to finish.

Q: Can you get a key made faster than the dealer?

Almost always, yes. The programming itself takes a dealer about the same amount of time in the bay, but getting into that bay is the problem. Dealers schedule key work around their regular service load, and if the right fob blank isn't already in stock, you're waiting on a parts order before anything else can happen. I carry blanks for the 2007 RX on my vehicle. One appointment, same day, done on site.

Q: My fob buttons work but the range is terrible. Why?

Nine times out of ten on these, it's the battery. The 2007 RX remote head key takes a CR2016, and that's a specific size people often swap out with a CR2032 thinking they're interchangeable. They're not. The 2032 is thicker and either won't seat properly or will bow the battery contacts out of position. Even if it fits loosely, the connection is unreliable. Grab the right CR2016, seat it clean, and retest range from a normal distance.

Q: The key turns but the car won't start. Is this an immobilizer problem?

Possibly. On a 2007 RX, if the key turns freely and the engine cranks but won't catch, the vehicle security system may not be reading the transponder in the key correctly. This can happen if the key has been damaged, if the internal chip has failed, or if there's an issue with the receiver in the steering column area. Check the dash for any key-not-detected or security indicator warning.

2007 Lexus RX Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a text from someone in Wagon Wheel, Oxnard. He'd been at a weekend gathering and at some point between the front door and the parking area, his only key for the 2007 RX just disappeared. Checked his jacket, checked the ground, checked everywhere twice. Gone.

He found me online and asked if I actually came to the car. I told him yeah, drop a pin, I'll be there. He did.

When I pulled up he was standing next to the RX looking at it the way people do when they realize their car has basically become a really expensive lawn ornament. No spare anywhere. The dealer had given him a Monday morning estimate and mentioned something about parts availability before he'd even finished explaining the situation.

I set up on the spot. All-keys-lost on this generation means the security system runs a timed countdown before it accepts anything new, so I walked him through what was happening while we waited. Not a lot to do during that window except talk. He asked how long I'd been doing this. I told him a while.

Once the system cleared, I programmed the new remote head key, tested the buttons, tested the blade in the door and ignition, and walked him through the battery type so he'd know for next time.

He asked what the dealer would have charged. I told him to call and find out, then decide how he felt about what I'd just charged him. He laughed.

Car was running before I packed up my bag.

Lexus RX Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What if I need a Lexus key after hours or on the weekend?▼

Call me directly. Dealer service departments run tight hours, and weekend coverage on key and immobilizer work is inconsistent. If you lose your only key on a Friday evening, you are likely looking at a tow and a Monday morning appointment at minimum, assuming the right parts are already on the shelf. That is a long time to be without a car. I work nights and weekends because that is exactly when these situations come up.
