Near Ventura Pier on a weekday evening, a woman called me about her 2016 Lexus RX 350. Her father had just finished with a specialist. She was getting him from the wheelchair into the passenger seat when the fob stopped talking to the car. Push start, nothing. Held the HYQ14FBB flat against the start button like the manual says for a dead battery, still nothing. Dash just showed "No key detected."
It was past six. The dealer on Auto Center Drive was closed hours ago.
I got there and used the emergency insert blade to unlock the driver door. Plugged my programmer into the OBD-II port under the dash. The 8A immobilizer on these fourth-gen RX models needs a diagnostic handshake to register a key, no owner workaround for that.
Pulled her old fob apart on the hood. The CR1632 had leaked just enough to corrode one of the board contacts on the BL1EW board. The chip was alive but the battery circuit was not delivering. Rather than gamble on cleaning a corroded board, I set her up with a new HYQ14FBB, programmed it, cut the emergency insert, and erased the old fob so it could not start the car if it turned up somewhere.
Tested every function. Doors, hatch, lock, unlock, panic, push start, handle touch sensors on all four doors.
From her call to engine running was under 50 minutes. She got her father home that evening in his own seat, in his own car, without transferring a wheelchair into a rideshare.
