Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on the 2016 Lexus RX?

The thing I tell every RX owner who asks about used OEM fobs from eBay or salvage listings: once a smart key has been registered to a vehicle, it cannot be reprogrammed to a different one. It is locked. Two different locksmiths with the right equipment still cannot move it. How long will the replacement key last on a 2016 RX?

The programming itself does not expire. Once a fob is registered to the vehicle, it stays registered. Battery changes every year or two depending on use, and the fob will keep working. Most of the issues RX owners run into over time are worn rubber button pads or a weak battery, not anything wrong with the programming. What if the replacement key stops working a few weeks after you program it?

That said, when a correctly programmed fob stops working on an RX, the cause is usually the vehicle side, not the key. RX and related Toyota-platform owners have reported that certain settings in the vehicle's own menu can interfere with smart key reception -- things that got toggled without realizing it. A reseated battery or a settings check often resolves it before anything else needs to happen.

We troubleshoot the actual failure. We are not going to hand you a new fob and call it done if the real issue is somewhere else.

I have a spare key that still works, but my main fob died. Do I need to erase anything before you program a new one?

No erasing needed when you still have a working key. The 2016 RX can hold multiple registered fobs at once. We add the new one to the existing list alongside your working spare -- your spare keeps functioning exactly as it did, and the new fob gets paired in. All-keys-lost is a different job with a longer procedure built into the system, but as long as one key is present and working, the add-a-key process is faster and simpler.

The door handles on my RX are hit or miss. Sometimes touch unlock works, sometimes I have to use the fob button. Is the key dying?

Not necessarily, and this is one of the more common complaints RX owners post about on forums. If the start button still recognizes the fob reliably, the fob itself is almost certainly fine.

Touch unlock at the door handle depends on the antenna in that specific door detecting the fob when your hand is near the sensor. If it is inconsistent on one door but solid on another, the issue is usually the handle sensor or the wiring behind it, not the key. Dirt and moisture around the sensor area can also cause this -- wipe the handle down and retest before assuming anything is failing.

If it is inconsistent on all doors and the start button is also getting flaky, then a weak CR1632 is the first thing to rule out. Swap the battery and see if the behavior changes. If it does, you saved yourself a service call.
