2023 Lexus RX Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
I got a call from a customer in Dos Vientos, over in Thousand Oaks, who had a fob that worked fine for about a week after another shop programmed it. Then it started getting inconsistent. Push-to-start would respond in the morning, then by midafternoon she would press the button and get a key-not-detected warning on the dash. Sometimes it would recover on its own. Sometimes it would not.
She figured it was something electrical with the car. It is a reasonable assumption when the problem comes and goes like that.
When I got there, I ran a read on the fob with my diagnostic equipment. The issue was not the battery, and it was not the car. The transponder inside the replacement fob was not the correct variant for this generation of the RX. It was close enough to get through initial programming and pass the first round of verification, but the deeper security check that runs during normal operation was rejecting it intermittently. That is the kind of failure that looks like a ghost problem until you read the chip directly.
I programmed a correct replacement fob matched to her vehicle, swapped in a fresh CR2032, and walked every function: lock, unlock, the remaining buttons, and confirmed the start button read the fob reliably. I also verified the emergency blade cut matched her door lock so she had a working mechanical backup.
She texted me two weeks later. Still working. No warnings.
The dealer quoted her over a week out for an appointment, plus the cost of the key itself and programming. She saved a good chunk going the mobile route and had it sorted same afternoon, in her driveway.
