Out in Saticoy, I got a call from a guy who was standing next to his 2017 Lexus RX in a parking lot off Wells Road. The fob had been acting up for a few weeks - intermittent lock response, occasional key-not-detected warning when he walked up to the door. He figured it would sort itself out. It did not.
By the time he called me, the push-button start was refusing to acknowledge the fob entirely. He had already tried holding the fob against the start button, which sometimes coaxes enough signal through when the battery is critically low, and it worked once. Then it stopped working. He thought the whole key was dead.
I got there and popped the fob open. The CR1632 inside was the original, and it was reading nearly flat. But there was also a small crack along the battery tray tab, probably from a previous battery swap done with a flathead instead of a plastic pry tool. The contact on one side had deflected just enough to lose consistent pressure.
Replaced the battery, straightened the contact, reseated everything correctly, and tested all four buttons plus the door handle touch response on both front doors. Everything came back normal. The start button recognized the fob without hesitation.
He did not need a new key. He did not need programming. He needed the right small repair, done on site, for a fraction of what a dealer trip would have cost him in time alone - and they would have started by quoting him a new fob.
