2003 Lexus RX
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How fast can you get to my location in South Winds or anywhere in Oxnard?

Typical arrival is around 30 minutes from the time you call, depending on where you are and what traffic looks like. When you reach out, I confirm the key details for your 2003 RX and come loaded with the right blank and tools. No back-and-forth, no waiting on parts. Dealer appointments for Lexus key work in this area are routinely days out, sometimes longer. I treat every call as same-day.

Q: Can I get a replacement key made today?

Yes. I carry blanks and programming equipment for the 2003 RX on every call. There is no ordering and waiting for a part to ship. One call and I come to you, whether you are in a parking lot in South Winds, at home, or at work somewhere in Oxnard. Same-day is the standard, not the exception.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2003 RX. Can you program it, or do I need a specific blank?

This comes up a lot. The 2003 RX uses a remote head key, meaning the fob and the blade are one unit. A fob-only replacement you bought online will not work as a drop-in unless it matches the factory FCC ID on the original and still needs to be programmed to your vehicle. On top of that, the key blade needs to be cut to your specific locks.

Q: My 2003 RX remote stopped working after I had the battery replaced at a shop. Did they mess something up?

Possibly. The CR1616 in the remote head key on these is thin and easy to install backwards or seat off-center. If the polarity is flipped or the battery is not making clean contact with both terminals, the remote goes dead even with a fresh cell. Pop the key head open and check that the battery is seated flat, correct side up, and that the contacts are not bent away from the battery face.

2003 Lexus RX Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a parent in the South Winds area of Oxnard on a Wednesday morning. She had dropped off her kid and walked back to the parking lot to find her remote head key completely unresponsive.

No lock, no unlock, nothing. The car would still start when she used the key blade, which told me the transponder was likely fine. But she had no remote function at all, and she needed to get to a work meeting inside an hour.

She had already looked up the dealer. Two-day wait to even be seen, and a quote that made her wince. She called me instead.

I was in South Winds within about 25 minutes. Popped the key head open right there in the lot. The CR1616 inside had dropped low enough to kill the remote signal entirely but not far enough to trip any dash warning. Swapped the battery, seated it correctly, and walked every button to confirm. Lock, unlock, and the third button all came back clean.

She still had about 15 minutes before she needed to leave.

If the battery swap had not brought it back, I had the blanks and the tools to cut and program a replacement on the spot. But sometimes it really is just the battery. The dealer route for that same outcome would have cost her two days and a lot more money. She made her meeting.

Lexus RX Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How long does a 2003 Lexus RX key replacement take?▼

Depends on the situation. If you have at least one working key and just need a spare, the programming side moves pretty quickly once I am connected. If you are in an all-keys-lost situation, the immobilizer on these requires a wait period before it will accept new keys, so total on-car time for that scenario runs closer to 20 to 30 minutes.
