Got a call from a parent near McGrath State Beach in Oxnard. She was sitting in the school lot between drop-off and a work meeting, and her 2003 Lexus RX 300 would not start. Key turned, engine cranked, nothing caught. Classic immobilizer lockout, the SECURITY light on the dash was blinking steady.

I pulled up, popped the key open on the hood so she could see what we were working with. The NI4TMTX-1 remote head key, 89070-48020, with the 4C transponder chip embedded in the plastic head. Her original key had taken a hit at some point, hairline crack right near the chip seat. Enough to shift the glass capsule just slightly out of alignment with the coil antenna ring around the ignition cylinder.
I cut a fresh key by code using the key number off her owner's wallet card, seated a new 4C chip, and registered it to the transponder ECU through the OBD port. Whole thing, arrival to a running engine and tested remote lock, unlock, and panic, about 35 minutes.
She made her meeting. No tow, no loaner car, no two-day wait. Just a new key cut and programmed on site for a fraction of what the dealer wanted.
