Over in Surfers Point in Ventura, a body shop had a 2018 Lexus RX sitting in their lot with no working keys. The collision repair was done, but the car wouldn't start. They had called another locksmith first. That guy attempted a key program, hit a registration error, and left.
When I got there, I plugged in and saw why. The Smart Key ECU had been thrown into a locked fault state from the failed attempt. The system was rejecting all new fob registration. The dash just sat there with "Key Not Detected" no matter what you held near the column.
I pulled the Smart Key ECU, used my ACDP bench tool to read the EEPROM, cleared the fault data, and rebuilt the registration table clean. After that, the 89904-0E160 fob with FCC ID HYQ14FBB registered on the first attempt. No drama. I cycled through all four buttons, tested push-button start, walked each door handle for proximity lock and unlock, and opened the liftgate from the button on the back.
The body shop guy watched the whole bench process on the hood. He asked what went wrong the first time. Short answer: the previous tech lost communication mid-write and the ECU locked itself to protect against tampering. It is doing exactly what Toyota designed it to do.
Whole thing took about 90 minutes. A flatbed to the Lexus dealer and a multi-day wait would have cost the shop way more than just calling me second.
