2022 Lexus RX
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long will a replacement key last on the 2022 RX?

The programming itself doesn't wear out. Once a fob is properly registered to the vehicle, it stays registered. What wears out over time is the CR2032 battery, usually every two to four years depending on how often you're in and out of the car, and occasionally the rubber button pads after heavy daily use. We install a fresh battery with every key we make.

Q: What if the new key stops working after a few weeks?

Call us. The work is covered. That said, when a properly registered key quits a few weeks in, the cause is almost always the vehicle side, not the fob. Some RX owners have found that a setting buried in the vehicle's security menu can affect smart key reception without any obvious warning on the dash. Others have had battery contact issues after the fob got bumped or dropped.

Q: My 2022 RX shows a key warning on the dash but the fob battery is fine. What's going on?

This comes up more than people expect. If the battery is confirmed good and you're still getting a key-not-detected warning, a few things could be happening. There can be interference from certain aftermarket accessories, phone cases with magnets, or even the position of the fob in your pocket relative to the door handle sensor.

Q: I have one key for my 2022 RX. Is adding a second key something you can do on-site?

Yes, and it's worth doing sooner rather than later. Adding a second key while you still have one working key is a much simpler job than an all-keys-lost situation where you've lost both. The process involves registering the new fob alongside the existing one using diagnostic equipment at the OBD port. Both keys work after. Nothing gets erased. All-keys-lost is doable too, but it takes longer and costs more.

2022 Lexus RX Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Saturday evening in Conejo Oaks. A couple had been at the theater and came back to the parking lot to a fob that wouldn't respond to anything. No door unlock, no response at the start button, nothing. The car just sat there ignoring them.

They tried the fob again. Then again. One of them thought maybe the car had locked them out somehow. They'd heard something about Lexus security doing that. They weren't wrong to wonder, but this one was simpler.

They found me online, I was already in Thousand Oaks, and I pulled up in about 12 minutes.

I popped the fob open on the hood. The CR2032 was reading low, but the battery contacts had a slight corrosion film on them that was making it worse than the voltage alone would explain. Cleaned the contacts, seated a fresh battery, and used my diagnostic tool to confirm the fob was communicating properly with the vehicle before I closed it back up.

Then I walked every button. Lock, unlock, and both of the remaining buttons. Checked the door handle touch sensors on both front doors. Confirmed the start button was reading the fob at normal range, not just when you jam it against the console.

The car drove home Saturday night. They didn't need a new fob, didn't need to wait until Monday, and didn't need a dealer appointment. When the van is stocked and the fix is on-site, a 9pm call works the same as a Tuesday morning.

Lexus RX Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on Lexus vehicles?▼

We use fresh, unprogrammed blanks built to OEM spec, matched to the factory fob ID and frequency for your specific vehicle. On the 2022 RX, the smart key system is not forgiving about what it accepts. The thing that catches people off guard: a used OEM fob bought online is already registered to the vehicle it came from and cannot be re-enrolled into a different car. Two different locksmiths working on the same fob won't change that.
