2013 Lexus RX
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long will the replacement key last?

The programming itself doesn't degrade. Once the fob is registered to your RX, it stays registered. What fails over time is physical: the battery goes flat, button pads wear down and stop making clean contact, or the shell cracks from being dropped. The CR1632 inside the fob typically lasts a year or two with normal daily use, sometimes longer. We put a fresh battery in with every key we make.

Q: What if the new key stops working after a few weeks?

Call us. We stand behind what we program. That said, when a properly registered smart key on a Lexus starts acting up shortly after the job, the vehicle is usually the culprit, not the fob. RX owners have reported that a setting buried in the vehicle's smart key menu can limit which fobs the car responds to, or disable touch-unlock on specific doors, and it's easy to miss. A quick settings check resolves it without touching the key at all.

Q: My 2013 RX shows a key warning on the dash even though the fob battery is new. What's going on?

A few things can cause this even with a fresh CR1632 installed. First, check how the battery is seated. If it went in slightly off-angle or the contact clips lost their tension from being pried open, the fob reads as dead even with a brand new cell. Pop it back open, make sure the battery is flat and centered, and the clips are snug against it.

Q: Can I use the metal insert key to start the 2013 RX if the smart key fob dies completely?

Not directly. The 2013 RX doesn't have a traditional ignition cylinder you slot a blade into. The insert key inside the fob is there to mechanically unlock the driver's door if the battery is dead and the handles won't respond. To actually start the vehicle when the fob battery is flat, you hold the fob itself up to the start button and press. The vehicle can read a low-power fob at close range that way.

2013 Lexus RX Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A parent at the orthodontist in Pacific View called me on a Monday afternoon. Her 2013 RX needed a replacement smart key and the dealer told her Thursday at the earliest, possibly Friday if the fob wasn't in stock. She had two kids cycling through after-school activities and no backup car. Thursday wasn't going to work.

I was at the lot that same afternoon. The job was an add-a-key with her original fob present, which is the cleaner version of the job. Connected the scan tool at the OBD port, ran the smart key registration sequence for the RX, cut the emergency insert blade to match her vehicle, and tested every button plus the door handle touch points and the start button.

The whole thing was done before she got back with the kids. She texted me a thumbs up from the driver's seat.

She mentioned the dealer quote almost as a side note on her way out. She'd saved a good chunk, and more than that, she didn't lose three days.

Lexus RX Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on Lexus vehicles?▼

We use fresh, unpaired blanks built to OEM spec for the 2013 RX. The factory FCC ID and frequency matching matters on these because the RX smart key system is particular about what it will register. The bigger issue people run into is buying a used fob.
